A side project by the inventor of the Tower of Hanoi

Dots and Boxes was published in 1889 by the French mathematician Édouard Lucas under the name La Pipopipette. Lucas is better known for the Tower of Hanoi — likewise a design that wraps a deep mathematical structure in minimal rules. Dots and Boxes is the same instinct at work: simple enough to teach anyone on a napkin, deep enough to fill a monograph.

Declining to take is the central technique

Beginners play it as "claim every box you see," which reduces the whole game to passive harvesting. The real skill lies elsewhere: a box with three sides does not have to be taken. You can deliberately decline two boxes and leave the chain for your opponent to open, because in the endgame whoever is forced to open a long chain has effectively handed the entire chain over. Giving up two boxes to win a whole chain is the line that separates a children's game from a strategy game.

Long chains and parity

The endgame can be formalized completely: treat the remaining space as a collection of chains and loops, then count how many there are and the parity of their lengths. Whoever must open the first long chain will keep conceding from then on. Experienced players start controlling the parity of the chain count in the middlegame so that their opponent is the one forced to open. This theory is not folklore — it can be computed exactly.

Studied seriously by mathematicians

Elwyn Berlekamp, one of the founders of combinatorial game theory, wrote an entire book about it: The Dots and Boxes Game: Sophisticated Child's Play (2000), which systematizes long-chain rules, the double-cross, and the transfer of control. A children's game drawn on graph paper became a standard teaching example in combinatorial game theory, which is probably the best possible endorsement it could have.

  • Closing two boxes with one edge scores 2 points but still grants only one additional turn, not two.
  • The double-cross is the core long-chain technique: deliberately leaving the last two boxes of a chain untaken so your opponent is forced to open the next one.
  • Lucas also introduced the Lucas numbers named after him, closely related to the Fibonacci sequence; Dots and Boxes is one of many recreational mathematics works he produced.

  1. Warm moves first. Draw one previously unused horizontal or vertical edge between immediately neighboring dots. Diagonals, lines that skip a dot, and duplicate edges are illegal. The available 3×3, 4×4, and 5×5 settings count boxes; each dot grid has one more row and column.
  2. If the new edge is the fourth side of a box, the mover claims that box and scores one point. An interior edge can close two adjacent boxes at once; both are claimed for two points. A boundary edge touches only one real box and cannot score an imaginary box outside the board.
  3. Completing one or more boxes keeps the turn, so the same player draws the next single edge. If that next edge also completes a box, the sequence continues; if it completes none, the turn passes. Closing two boxes does not bank two future edge actions.
  4. A player is not required to take an available box. Any unused legal edge may be chosen, including a distant edge that deliberately leaves a three-sided box open.
  5. The game ends after every horizontal and vertical adjacency has been joined. Each player's score is the number of boxes they own; higher score wins and equal scores draw. A 4×4 box board has 16 points and can tie, while 3×3 and 5×5 box boards have odd totals and cannot.

Your First Game

Use this order of thought to get through a complete game quickly.

  1. Begin by looking for safe edges: an edge is usually safe when drawing it does not leave any unclaimed neighboring box with three sides. Check both boxes beside an interior edge before committing.
  2. When a three-sided box appears, inspect what follows it. An isolated box can be taken immediately, but the entrance to a chain may let the player who opens it collect several boxes in sequence.
  3. Watch for one shared edge missing from two three-sided boxes. Drawing it claims both at once, but your next decision is still exactly one edge.
  4. On the default 4×4 board, do not judge the opening only by the live score. Count remaining safe edges and identify regions that have already become chains waiting to be opened.

Practical Strategy

Move from knowing the rules to playing with a plan.

  • A chain is a corridor of adjacent boxes that can normally be collected in sequence once one end is opened. In the endgame, compare chain lengths instead of automatically taking the first available point.
  • A double-cross can preserve control: take a long chain except for its last two boxes, then choose the edge that hands those two to the opponent. After claiming them, the opponent must keep playing and may be forced to open the next, larger chain for you.
  • A double-cross is valuable only in the right remainder. Giving away two boxes with no later chain to recover usually loses points; conceding two to secure a much longer remaining chain can be decisive.
  • Do not confuse a double claim with a double-cross. A double claim scores two boxes immediately through one shared edge; a double-cross deliberately leaves two boxes to decide who must open the next chain.

Winning and Special Rules

Details that are easy to miss but can change the result.

  • This implementation uses the classic blank-border rectangular game. It does not include a pre-drawn frame, triangular grids, compulsory captures, timed skips, or special scoring variants.
  • Because scoring keeps the same player, one side may draw many consecutive edges. Human and AI sequences remain causal: each edge appears, its newly closed boxes fill, and only then can the next edge begin.
  • The default is always labeled “4×4 boxes (5×5 dots).” Both counts are shown because calling either one merely a 4×4 board is a common source of rule and implementation errors.

Common Mistakes

The traps new players fall into most often.

  • Treating a 4×4 dot grid as 4×4 boxes. Four dots in each direction enclose only 3×3, or nine, boxes.
  • Assuming a two-box edge grants two undetermined future lines. It grants only the next one-edge action; a non-scoring next edge immediately passes the turn.
  • Automatically taking every three-sided box. Scoring is optional, and declining an immediate point can preserve control of the chain endgame.
  • Treating edges as player-owned. An edge is simply drawn and unavailable to both players; ownership belongs to completed boxes, not to the lines around them.
