Command sixteen pieces in the world's best-known game of checkmate and strategy. Play Chess free in your browser against adjustable AI. No download or account.
Play the computer in your browser at ten levels, from a first game up to Stockfish 18. Hint marks the recommended move and shows the engine's score, search depth and continuation. Daily tactics puzzles included.
How You WinCheckmate the opposing king: leave it under attack with no legal move that escapes. Checkmate ends the game instantly. If the player to move has no legal move but is not in check, the game is a stalemate and scored as a draw.
Hint marks a recommended move on the board and shows the engine's score, search depth and continuation; Undo takes back the last round. After the game, Review opens it from History move by move, and Analyze marks the moves that went wrong and shows a better one.
It is free, with no download and no account: the board opens in the browser on a computer or a phone. The AI runs on your own device, and an unfinished game comes back when you return in the same browser.
Yes. Choose White or Black under Side and the computer takes the other side. There are ten levels and a first visit starts at level 2; start at 1 or 2 if you are new, and move up when you win comfortably. You can swap sides in the middle of a game, or switch to 2 players and carry on from the same position.
Two open-source engines. Levels 1 to 8 use Fairy-Stockfish with its classical evaluation, held back by its skill setting, search depth and the number of candidate moves it picks from, so their strength does not depend on how fast your device is. Levels 9 and 10 use Stockfish 18 with NNUE neural-network evaluation: level 9 caps the search depth, while level 10 has no cap and thinks for about 2 seconds a move, so it plays stronger on faster devices. Both engines run locally in your browser.
Yes. Set Side to 2 players and take turns on the same phone or computer, White first. A button beside the far side's name turns that side's pieces around for the person sitting opposite. There are no online rooms, so you cannot play someone who is not with you.
Yes. Puzzles & practice has more than 3,000 chess tactics puzzles in four bands: Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert. Work through them as a level path of 120 stages, or solve the daily puzzle. They are free and need no account.
Yes. Review opens History, where every game played on this device can be replayed move by move, with your wins, draws and losses at each level. Analyze has the engine mark the moves that went wrong — a missed mate in one, a move that allows mate, a piece left to be taken — and show a better one. Games are stored only in your browser.
No. Hint can be used on any move: it runs the current level's engine at full strength, marks the recommended move on the board and shows the score, search depth and continuation. Undo takes back the last round and can be pressed again to go further back.
White moves first and the sides alternate; you cannot skip a move. The king moves one square, the queen along ranks, files and diagonals, the rook along ranks and files, the bishop along diagonals, and the knight in an L that jumps over pieces. Pawns move forward and capture diagonally, with two squares allowed on their first move. Castling, en passant and promotion each get a line in the quick start above, and the full rules page covers them in detail.
Checkmate the other king: it is in check and no move gets it out. If the side to move has no legal move but is not in check, that is stalemate and a draw — the opposite of Xiangqi, where it loses. Threefold repetition, fifty moves without a capture or pawn move, and too little material left to mate are drawn automatically, with no need to offer a draw.
They are two different games. Chess is played on an 8 × 8 board with the pieces inside the squares, and White moves first; Xiangqi uses a 9-by-10 grid with the pieces on the intersections, a river and two palaces, and Red moves first. In chess a pawn that reaches the far rank promotes to a queen, and there is no cannon; having no legal move is a draw in chess but a loss in Xiangqi. Both are on this site, each with its own page.
